The race is sure to be exciting and there are many side stories to follow in the 135th running of this incredible race so let’s get everyone up to speed before the horses take to the track at post time on Saturday.

The first thing to watch for is whether or not Mine That Bird (11/2 currently) can win the 2nd leg of the Triple Crown after taking home the Kentucky Derby earlier this month.
Winning the first two legs of the Triple Crown is never easy but this horse won pretty convincingly last time out so you just never know. One thing that is certain is that come post time for the Preakness this horse will have a brand new rider.
Perhaps an even more intriguing story to follow on the Preakness would be the addition of filly Rachel Alexandra (8/5 currently) to the starting gate at post time.
Mine That Bird was ridden by Calvin Borel in the Kentucky Derby but the legendary jockey opted to get off of his Derby mount in order to ride the highly-touted female Rachel Alexandra.
Not only will Borel be racing against Mine That Bird but he’ll also be racing on a filly which is possibly even more interesting. It’s been a long time since a filly has been able to beat the boys but the 2009 Preakness could be the year that streak is broken as Rachel Alexandra has looked like this year’s dominant horse in recent races.
Pioneer of the Nile hasn’t had quite the back story these two horses have had but he’s the closest horse on the odds to Rachel Alexandra and he should be a main threat to both of the more-publicized 3-year olds in this field. Pioneer of the Nile comes in at 4/1 and will be a big challenge when post time rolls around for the 135th Preakness.
