The 135th running of the world’s most famous horse race is almost here and the lineup is shaping up let’s take a look at the Kentucky Derby odds.
The Grade 1 Stakes race for three year-old thoroughbreds is one and a quarter miles long and the Kentucky Derby favorites all have question marks surrounding them that will likely make this anyone’s race.
Although the Kentucky Derby lineup is not completely finalized, Bookmaker.com Racebook still has the Kentucky Derby odds up for many horses and none come in as big of a favorite as I Want Revenge at +300.
This horse is one of the best to come out of New York in recent years and his track times should have him near the front but he also has never raced against any serious threats which make it hard to predict how he’ll be able to respond when pushed from another horse that is as good as he is.
Another one of the Kentucky Derby favorites is Pioneer of the Nile at +500.
This is another horse that will have a ton of eyes on him on Derby day but at the same time he has never ran on dirt and many in the horse racing industry suspect that he may not like the surface.
This will be a big test for him and it’s really difficult to figure out how he’ll respond to a surface he has never competed on.
Quality road is also listed at +500 on the Kentucky Derby betting odds and would likely be the highest priced of the Kentucky Derby favorites if he didn’t have a crack in his right hind hoof.
The horse is still expected to be a frontrunner with the injury but with all the quality horses running in this race, it’s hard to back an injured (albeit extremely skilled) horse at that line.
The only two other horses in the Kentucky Derby lineup that are listed at +1000 or less are Dunkirk at +500 and Friesan Fire at +700.
Dunkirk has an outside chance to be involved at the end but I’m not 100% sold on his ability to stick with some of the other favorites mentioned despite looking very good in recent races.
The Kentucky Derby odds seem to think the Louisiana Derby champion Friesan Fire can compete after he won all 3 of his races this year but the Kentucky Derby lineup may be too talented for him to stick with.
