Rip Van Winkle (3/2 odds) – With such a talented field of prime contenders it still surprises me to see this horse atop the entries’ odds but such is the case. European runners have done well lately and the Irish favorite for the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic leads all runners thanks to recent victories in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and the Sussex Stakes which are both very competitive European races. Possibly the best amongst the contenders but still has things to prove.
Zenyatta (4/1 odds) – Undefeated filly finally taking on the top male contenders will be a great storyline for the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic. Her most recent start was a win in the Lady’s Secret Stakes on October 10th at this same Santa Anita track.
Summer Bird (6/1 odds) – The 2009 Belmont Stakes winner is the 3rd top contender on the odds in the Classic this year and is coming off 2 victories in the Shadwell Travers and Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes.
Gio Ponti (9/1 odds) – Still one of the top contenders despite coming in 2nd last time out thanks to a heavy rain after winning the last 4 straight races prior including one at Santa Anita.
