There’s a clear favorite to win the 2010 Mercury Music Prize and we’ll give our readers what information we have.
The Mercury Music Prize (known now as the Barclaycard Mercury Prize for sponsorship reasons) is awarded each year to the singer or group with the best album from the United Kingdom or Ireland. Previous Mercury Music Prize winners include Franz Ferdinand, The Arctic Monkeys, Primal Scream, and Badly Drawn Boy. There are 12 excellent albums up for the top prize this time around and we’ll preview the betting odds currently up at SportsInteraction Sportsbook.
A winner of the 2010 Mercury Music Prize won’t be announced until September 7th but we know the short list of nominees that were released on July 20th. Nominees for the Music Prize are Biffy Clyro for Only Revolutions, Corinne Bailey Rae for The Sea, Dizzee Rascal for Tongue n’Cheek, Kit Downes Trio for Golden, Foals for Total Life Forever, I Am Kloot for Sky At Night, Laura Marling for I Speak Because I Can, Mumford & Sons for Sigh No More, Paul Weller for Wake Up The Nation, Villagers for Becoming a Jackal, Wild Beasts for Two Dancers, and The xx for xx.
It appears that word may have leaked early on the potential winner (look away if you don’t want a potential spoiler) because The xx are the overwhelming +187 betting favorites on the SportsInteraction Sportsbook odds. This is the three-piece bands’ debut album and got to #9 on the Rolling Stone “best of the year" list while getting as high as 16 on the UK’s album charts.
No one has ever taken home two Mercury Music Prize awards but there’s a long shot in the 2010 field that could do just that. Dizzee Rascal was your 2003 winner for Boy in da Corner and he could take home another win for Tongue n’Cheek this time around. If you believe he can pull the upset than the 14/1 odds offered on him pay off nicely.
