"Spiderman" actor Tobey Maguire apparently ended up in a spiderweb of problems and he is now to stand trial in January 2012.
Famous for playing the role of Spiderman in the movie trilogy about the superhero, Tobey Maguire's name appears in a lawsuit filed against him by a proxy for investors shammed by hedge fund conman Bradley Ruderman, EOnline reports.
Ruderman is serving a 10-year sentence in federal prison after pleading guilty to four charges, two counts of wire fraud, and two counts of investment adviser fraud. The Beverly Hills hedge fund manager is said to have shammed clients in excess of $25 million. Eventually, he used some of that money to fund his poker binge.
In the lawsuit filed against Tobey Maguire by a trustee for investors in Ruderman's Ponzi Scheme, the fraud victims ask him to pay off $300,000 that he supposedly won playing poker with Ruderman. However, "Spiderman" stated earning $187,000 in winnings, but also losing back a total of $168,500, money repaid to the scam artist Ruderman.
Parties have until the end of November to depose witnesses, and show evidence they are planning to introduce at trial, set to start the last week of January 2012.
