Belmont Stakes News: I'll Have Another Scratched, Retired

I'll Have Another

I’ll Have Another is out of the Belmont Stakes and has been retired from the sport of horse racing altogether.

The Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner was set to race for the first Triple Crown since 1978, but his Belmont Stakes run is off and he has been retired after an early morning gallop today at Belmont Park.

Trainer Doug O’Neill announced on “The Dan Patrick Show” the news that the horse racing world hated to hear, and it appears that this great horse is retired because of a swollen left front tendon.  I’ll Have Another was the 4-5 betting favorite according to the betting odds at Bovada Sportsbook, but now it appears the honor of favorite will fall to either Dullahan or Union Rags when the race is ran on Saturday.

This isn’t the first time I’ll Have Another has encountered injury issues after taking the rest of the year off in 2011 with shin problems after a losing romp in the Hopeful Stakes.  A check by a veterinarian showed I’ll Have Another’s tendon to be “kind of tender”, and the horse’s connections decided it was in the best interest of everyone involved to call it a day on a great horse racing career.

As I’m writing this, horse racing odds on the 2012 Belmont Stakes are just coming up following the news of I’ll Have Another’s sudden retirement.  As expected, both Union Rags and Dullahan are the overwhelming favorites, while Paynter also received a massive bump and is now at 4/1 after being listed at 10/1 when I’ll Have Another was in the Belmont Stakes field.
