Our 2014 Belmont Stakes predictions will try to determine the winner, while we also have horse racing picks on a superfecta box with a big payout.
The 2014 Belmont Stakes is set to be run from Belmont Park tonight and California Chrome will be looking to become the first Triple Crown winning horse since Affirmed in 1978. Post time for the 2014 Belmont Stakes is set for around 6:45 PM ET and you can catch the final leg of the Triple Crown live on the NBC channel.
There are a total of 11 horses entered into the 2014 Belmont Stakes and California Chrome is the large 3-5 betting favorite after already taking home impressive victories in the 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. Wicked Strong and Tonalist are considered to be the strongest competitors to California Chrome’s legendary win, but we also have a few large underdogs in our 2014 Belmont Stakes predictions that could shake things up here.
Before we get to the 2014 Belmont Stakes winner and superfecta box predictions, let’s toss a few contenders and tell you why. Also we’d like to point out that all of the 2014 Belmont Stakes odds used in this article are from 5Dimes Sportsbook and our good friends over there are offering anyone that wants to bet on the race a 50% cash bonus on top of their first deposit that can be used on any of the entries!
2014 Belmont Stakes Betting Odds & Post Positions from 5Dimes Sportsbook:
1 – Medal Count, 28-1
2 – California Chrome, 3-5

2014 Belmont Stakes Predictions – Horses to Toss:
Tonalist – Plenty of horse racing insiders are making predictions on this horse pulling the upset but I don’t think he has it in him. His only impressive win came on a sloppy track and before that he hadn’t impressed against far inferior competition.
General A Rod – Early pace setting speed horse couldn’t go fast enough in the Kentucky Derby and I don’t see much changing in the longer Belmont Stakes. He should fade late in a big way.
Matuszak – Horse has lost 7 races in a row and I don’t have any faith in a sudden turnaround.
Commanding Curve – The odds are too high and the talent level is too low. Commanding Curve was good enough in a crowded Kentucky Derby field but there are better late runners in the 2014 Belmont Stakes at higher odds.
Matterhorn – The only reason that this horse is even in the 2014 Belmont Stakes field is because trainer Todd Pletcher saw 2 of his stronger horses get injured. Horse has been dusted in every race this year.
2014 Belmont Stakes Predictions – The Remaining Entries:
That leaves us with Medal Count (28-1), California Chrome (3-5), Ride On Curlin (12-1), Samraat (32-1), Commissioner (28-1), and Wicked Strong (6-1) as potential picks for the 2014 Belmont Stakes winner and our juicy superfecta box.
California Chrome is going to be impossible to toss from our 2014 Belmont Stakes predictions. The horse is simply running too fast to not make it into the top 4, although I do feel he could be defeated. Lost in California Chrome’s Kentucky Derby win was an even more impressive run from Wicked Strong who had a rough trip after drawing the dreaded #20 spot in the starting gate. Wicked Strong rallied for 4th and has the best chance to pull the upset in the Belmont Stakes.
Ride On Curlin is not overly impressive in any particular facet of horse racing but he tries hard and never stops which makes me consider him for the superfecta box as he’s always near the leaders even when not winning. Medal Count is extremely underrated because of a bad trip in the Kentucky Derby and his pedigree for distance (sired by Dynaformer) should ensure he’s near the lead at the finish.
Commissioner makes for a great long shot in the Belmont Stakes because he has a nice pedigree for distance (sired by 1992 Belmont Stakes winner A.P. Indy). He won’t win the race but I could see him passing up quite a few tired horses near the end as he finds his way to 3rd or 4th. Samraat was my pick in the Preakness Stakes and he’s a horse that will be up near the pace which has worked out well in recent editions of the Belmont Stakes.
2014 Belmont Stakes Predictions – Winner and Superfecta Box:
Our superfecta box includes race favorite California Chrome and Wicked Strong, as well as underdogs Commissioner and Medal Count. I hate tossing out Samraat and Ride On Curlin but, beyond the two favorites, I feel like our higher paying underdogs have just as good or better chances to handle the longer distance. If Commissioner or Medal Count sneaks into the top 2 finishers in the Belmont Stakes the payout here will be astronomical.
As for the 2014 Belmont Stakes winner, our money will have to be on Wicked Strong. I’ve always felt he’s a superior horse to California Chrome and the 6-1 betting odds are far better than what the race favorite pays. Now that Wicked Strong isn’t doomed from the start because of traffic and starting position he should run a much cleaner race. I feel that California Chrome will likely win the Triple Crown if Wicked Strong doesn’t pull off the upset so it’s not a bad consolation prize in the event of a loss.
2014 Belmont Stakes Winner: Wicked Strong
