College football betting picks are ready in the 2013 season opener between North Carolina and South Carolina.
The North Carolina Tar Heels (0-0) and the South Carolina Gamecocks (0-0) will open the 2013 college football season with a 6:00 PM ET game played out on Thursday, August 29th, and our betting picks will let you know which way to bet on this clash. These rivals used to meet up every year but the last matchup was back in 2007 and both programs have changed quite a bit since then.
North Carolina holds a large head-to-head lead in this series but South Carolina has been the much more dominant team over the last decade or so. The Gamecocks went 10-2 last year and lose running back Marcus Lattimore to the NFL, while the Tar Heels went 8-4 and lost their own star running back Giovanni Bernard to the pros as well.
Both teams return their starting quarterbacks as Connor Shaw looks to remain healthy for the Gamecocks and Bryn Renner attempts to duplicate last season’s success for the Tar Heels. South Carolina won 21-15 in Chapel Hill in that 2007 meeting and has now won 13 straight season openers. The Tar Heels are just 1-7 over the last few seasons when playing against ranked opponents.

The Gamecocks are currently favored by 11.5 in the 2013 season opener and they have some excellent players coming back. In addition to Shaw this team has 4 of 5 starting offensive linemen back in the mix and they should improve vastly on the 138 yards per game rushing they amassed last year. Also back is defensive end Jadeveon Clowney who accumulated 13 sacks last season.
North Carolina does have Renner back but lost a majority of their offensive line and could have issues stopping the Gamecocks from getting into the backfield. The Tar Heels should have a strong defense this year with 7 returning starters, including all 4 members of the secondary, from a unit that gave up only 25.7 points per game last year.
Our college football picks on this game call for South Carolina to get a fairly easy victory as they cover the point spread. North Carolina is a good team but the Gamecocks are going to be a monster offensively this year and should run the ball at will against almost anyone. The Tar Heels don’t have the offensive line to get pass protection or running seams against a defense this good and I see a blowout coming to open up the season.
