2011 Del Mar Futurity Preview: Entries & Tips

It’s time for some horse racing news as we preview the 2011 Del Mar Futurity with entries and tips.

The 2011 Del Mar Futurity has attracted a field of 8 entries to the September 7th race, and we’ll preview all of the horses set to go 7 furlongs on Wednesday.  Post time of the 2011 Del Mar Futurity is set for around 8:30 PM ET and the 8 entries will be running for a portion of the $250,000 purse.  The Del Mar Futurity is a potential preview of next season’s Triple Crown horses, with 2009 winner Lookin at Lucky going on to win the Preakness Stakes after setting the polytrack race record here.

2011 Del Mar Futurity Entries and Horse Racing Tips:

Creative Cause – Winner of the Best Pal last time out, Creative Cause seems extremely likely to be one of the top two favorites at post time.  This horse is undefeated through 2 career starts and his stalking/closing style should do well here.

Majestic City – The other entry that might be favored in the Del Mar Futurity, Majestic City has won all 3 career starts including the Hollywood Juvenile Championship last time out.  He’ll press the pace and has shown a very nice late leg kick down the stretch.

Sheer Talent – It’s tough to know what to expect here since this horse has only raced once.  Sheer Talent broke his maiden at Del Mar while running the 6 furlongs nearly as fast as Majestic City did in his only race at that distance.  It was a big surprise with the horse sent off at 18-1 odds, and I’m not 100% convinced he's ready for a race of this magnitude just yet.

Mighty Monsoon – This is one of the few deep closers in the 2011 Del Mar Futurity, and that style might work out well here.  Mighty Monsoon ran out of room in the Best Pal Stakes but could have more success with the extra half furlong.  Although he was moving quickly at the end of that last race, Creative Cause was going just as fast while starting the big run from much closer to the pace.

Drill – This is a very interesting horse because he broke his maiden over 6 ½ furlongs at Del Mar last time out after finishing a horrendous 8th to Sheer Talent in his first attempt.  His winning time wasn’t anything special but he might enjoy the longer distance because of his mile-and-longer pedigree.

Corsa Di Cavailli – Broke his maiden at 5 ½ furlongs at Del Mar in his only career race, but the finishing time doesn’t indicate he’ll be able to keep up with the other runners.  There is some potential for improvement here with his sire After Market winning both career races at Del Mar.

Gun Boat – Another maiden winner at 5 ½ furlongs at Del Mar, Gun Boat bested another one of the Del Mar Futurity entries in Basmati in his only career race.  He has a pedigree for longer races on dirt, but he actually ran the maiden breaking win faster than Majestic City did at the same distance.

Basmati – All 3 career races have come at 5 ½ furlongs, with 2 seconds and 1 third to show for it.  He shouldn’t mind the distance here and Basmati should be very comfortable on the track after running at Del Mar his last two times out.
