2011 Preakness Stakes: Post Positions & Odds

Here are the results and morning line odds after the post positions draw for the 2011 Preakness Stakes.

The 2011 Preakness Stakes post positions draw just wrapped up from Pimlico Race Course, which then prompted the release of the early morning line odds for the May 21st race.  Some horses fared better than others and we’ll go over the spots each received in the starting gate while discussing a bit on how the spot works or doesn’t work for the entries.

Animal Kingdom was a surprise winner in the 2011 Kentucky Derby and will be the 2-1 morning line favorite while starting from post 11.  An outside spot seems like a nice draw for a horse that comes on late, and I doubt Animal Kingdom will have any problem with his post position.  That being said, other horses received better spots after the draw and might be better suited to capture the 2nd left of the Triple Crown.

Kentucky Derby favorite and eventual 8th place finisher is the 2nd betting choice in the Preakness Stakes and will start at the #10 spot with 9-2 odds.  Kentucky Derby 3rd place runner Mucho Macho Man starts right beside him at #9 and is at 6-1 right now.  Both horses come on late and I think either one of them could easily best Animal Kingdom if the pace is as fast as expected.  I think the owners of both horses have to be excited as the spot in the starting gate they received.

Astrology (15-1 odds) will be up with the pace setters and his #1 spot in the starting gate is a good one for the type of race he’s likely to run.  Mr. Commons (20-1) is on the far outside at #14 and also had a nice post position draw because of his late charge running style.  Pace setters Flashpoint (20-1) and Shackleford (12-1) should love their #4 and #5 spots in the starting gate, respectively, while King Congie (20-1) and his off-the-pace style should be just fine at #3.
