Belmont Stakes: Post Positions & Morning Line Odds

Belmont Stakes Odds

Post positions and morning line odds are now ready to go in the 2011 Belmont Stakes.

The field of 12 horses for the 2011 Belmont Stakes was set in stone today, and we now have morning line odds and results from the post position draw.  Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom is the 2-1 race favorite and will start from the #9 spot in the starting gate for the May 11th running of the Belmont Stakes.  Despite taking out Animal Kingdom in the Preakness Stakes, Shackleford will be the 3rd betting choice at 9-2 odds for the Belmont Stakes after drawing the #12 spot.  Since he’s the type of horse that wants to go wire-to-wire, the far outside post position and the added distance of the Belmont Stakes will likely have me tossing him from contention.  Kentucky Derby runner-up Nehro, who drew a much better starting spot in the gate at #6, and will be the 4-1 2nd betting choice according to the morning line odds at Belmont Park.

Master of Hounds will start from the #1 spot in the gate and figures to be the wise guy selection for the Belmont Stakes.  The invader is set at 10-1 odds and will be tied with Mucho Macho Man from the #10 hole as the 4th betting choice.  Santiva at #4, Prime Cut at #8, and Brilliant Speed at #5 are all listed at 15-1 odds, and I could very well end up using one of these horses in my superfecta wagering for the Belmont Stakes.

The morning line odds for the Belmont Stakes indicate that the long shots are going to be Stay Thirsty from the #2 spot (20-1), Ruler on Ice from #3 (20-1), Monzon from #7 (30-1), and Isn’t He Perfect from #11 (30-1).  I’ve made previous statements about how I think locking up Monzon at 30-1 odds is a great investment, and from what I’ve been hearing from the so-called horse racing experts, it appears that I may very well be alone in that assessment of including him amongst the other top-end contenders in the Belmont Stakes.
