2011 Shadwell Mile: Horses, Odds, & Post Positions:

1 – Tajaaweed, 15-1

2 – Sidney’s Candy, 3-1

3 – Dance And Dance, 8-1

4 – Zoffany, 3-1

5 – Gio Ponti, 5-2

6 – Society’s Chairman, 8-1

7 – Wise Dan, 12-1

8 – Get Stormy, 5-1

The trio of Sidney’s Candy, Get Stormy, and Wise Dan should be leading the field, but I have a feeling at least 2 of these horses are in trouble.  Get Stormy and Wise Dan will be trailing the hot pace of Sidney’s Candy, and the Shadwell Turf Mile has plenty of late closers in it.  That speed will set up some hard charges late and I think this front crop of horses gets passed up.  I’m a big fan of Sidney’s Candy racing on turf at a mile, but I’m not entirely sold on him keeping his lead with such a talented field.

The next cluster of horses will feature all the stalkers and closers, and there are some terrific late runners in this group.  Gio Ponti is probably the most accomplished, but Zoffany has a great late move as well.  Dance And Dance and Tajaaweed have potential, while Society’s Chairman is a consistent runner despite being the older entry into the 2011 Shadwell Turf Mile.

Gio Ponti, 5-2

Zoffany, 3-1

Sidney’s Candy, 3-1

As much as I hate taking the 3 favorites in my Shadwell Turf Mile trifecta box, I just don’t see any other way for this trio not to be first across the line.  Sidney’s Candy is in a perfect spot to try and get a huge lead, while Gio Ponti and Zoffany will be coming on quickly at the end to try and catch him.  Wise Dan and Get Stormy will get passed up late, while I haven’t seen anything from Society’s Chairman, Tajaaweed, and Dance And Dance that leads me to believe they’ll be able to out-close Zoffany and Gio Ponti.

2011 Shadwell Turf Mile Picks – Winner:

Sidney’s Candy, 3-1

We are calling for a wire-to-wire winner in the 2011 Shadwell Turf Mile, and Sidney’s Candy is going to run a huge race.  I’ve always thought that a mile on turf was the best option for this horse, and he is in an inside spot in the starting gate that will allow him to get to the lead on the first turn without expending much energy.  He’ll pull away and establish such a lead that the hard-charging Zoffany and Gio Ponti won’t be able to make up the distance.
