Kentucky Derby Betting - The Odds Shift
Written by Jake Thompson

With Uncle Mo out, it’s time to look at how the Kentucky Derby odds have shifted.
Betting odds for the 2011 Kentucky Derby have moved around quite a bit after Uncle Mo was scratched from the race today. Uncle Mo had been the 2nd strongest betting choice when the Kentucky Derby morning line odds were established, and his exclusion from the race has had a big impact on a number of contenders. We’ll go over each of horses in the Kentucky Derby lineup and show you exactly how much they’ve been affected by the field going from 20 to 19.
The odds we are using for this article can be found at most of the sportsbooks listed here on the website, and you really need to do your horse betting online if you want to maximize your payout. Not only can you lock in a price and avoid being subjected to track odds that often leave you with a worse price than you wanted, but you can also get bonus money to make your wager even more profitable.

Soldat opened at 12/1, now at 11/1
Nehro opened at 6/1, now at 8/1
Watch Me Go opened at 50/1, now at 60/1
There are a few things I want to point out about where the Kentucky Derby odds have moved. First off, outside of race favorite Dialed In, the only other horses that have seen their number drop from the opening line are Brilliant Speed, Comma to the Top, Master of Hounds, Santiva, Animal Kingdom, and Soldat. This is interesting for a couple of reasons. Uncle Mo was a horse that would be up near the lead and closers like Brilliant Speed and Animal Kingdom each got bumps because they have one less horse to pass, while front-runners like Master of Hounds, Comma to the Top, and Soldat have one less fast horse to mess with their pace. I honestly am not sure why Santiva is being bet since he doesn’t fall into either category, but apparently someone out there likes him enough to put down a big wager.
