Kentucky Derby Post Positions Draw - Live Results

We’ll be releasing the 2011 Kentucky Derby post positions with live results of the draw.

The 2011 Kentucky Derby post positions draw will let us know where the 20-horse lineup will be in the starting gate on May 7th, and we’ll have live updates coming from Churchill Downs so make sure to keep hitting refresh.  The post positions draw is set for 5:00 PM ET and those lucky enough to have the VERSUS channel can watch live as the Kentucky Derby starting gate is set.

As a bonus, we'll also be giving some quick thoughts on which horses fared the best and which entries might have trouble with their post positions.  That will start right after the Kentucky Derby post positions draw and, once again, just hit refresh to see the live results and our insider tips and information for the first leg of the 2011 Triple Crown.

Also keep in that mind that nothing ever starts on time, so don't be discouraged if you aren't seeing updates right away.  I'm watching like a hawk and will have information up as fast as anyone on the internet can supply it.

(5:22 PM ET update) - The first 10 horses have their spots in the starting gate and there will now be a 3-minute break before the final 10 are announced.

Tips and Information from the Kentucky Derby Post Positions Draw:

Animal Kingdom jockey Robby Albarado got tossed from his mount today at Churchill Downs.  Apparently he was bleeding from the face and might have broken his nose.  It's not expected to keep him out of the Kentucky Derby, but I figured I'd note it here.

Churchill Downs has the morning line odds ready to go (subject to change after the draw) and the four favorites as it stands now are Dialed In at 4/1, Uncle Mo at 9/2, Nehro at 6/1, and Archarcharch at 8/1.

The #1 and #5 post positions have each won 12 Kentucky Derby's, and are the best spot to have historically.  The #4 has won 11 times.

Good Post Positions:

Twice the Appeal at #3 - Calvin Borel's Kentucky Derby mount can dictate where he wants to be from this spot, and it wouldn't be a surprise if the two are stalking the leader.

Derby Kitten at #9 - I liked this horse to potentially find a way into the top 4 before I saw the spot, but this is perfect for a horse that can come from a bit off the pace with lots left at the end.

Comma to the Top at #6 - This speedy sprinter will get out to the lead and will hope to go wire-to-wire.  This spot is perfect for the horse but I feel it's ultimately going to set up closers like Dialed In, Nehro, Brilliant Speed, and Animal Kingdom.

Bad Post Positions:

Soldat at #17 - He needs to get out in front and be right in back of the leaders and it's going to be tough to get across that many horses to get a strong spot by the first pole.  I just don't see this horse being in any of my exotics.

Uncle Mo at #18 - Another early speed horse that will have to work much harder than others to get the position he needs.

Archarcharch at #1 - No one likes to draw the inside spot and Archarcharch could very well get caught inside and stuck during a potential move.
