Preakness Stakes Lineup: Animal Kingdom, Others Probable

Animal Kingdom

Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom is the latest horse to join the 2011 Preakness Stakes field.

Animal Kingdom, who won the 2011 Kentucky Derby as a 21/1 long shot, looks like the newest entry into the field for the Preakness Stakes on May 21st.  The win at Churchill Downs was Animal Kingdom’s first ever start on dirt and it has many horse racing enthusiasts wondering if this Kentucky Derby afterthought might just be the Triple Crown winner the industry has been hoping for.  Horse racing hasn’t seen a Triple Crown winner since Affirmed won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes back in 1978.

Other potential entries in the Preakness Stakes lineup include Kentucky Derby runners Dialed In, Mucho Macho Man, Santiva, and Shackleford, as well as non-Kentucky Derby horses like Prime Cut, Concealed Identity, Astrology, Dance City, Flashpoint, Norman Asbjornson, Sway Away, Mr. Commons, and King Congie.  Although the Kentucky Derby has a massive field with 20 possible spots open in the starting gate, the Preakness Stakes is limited to just 14 horses.

One horse that appears unlikely to be in the 2011 Preakness Stakes lineup is Kentucky Derby 2nd place finisher Nehro.  Although I personally think Nehro is the best 3-year-old out there right now, it appears that owner Ahmed Zayat is leaning toward the Belmont Stakes and then the Haskell with his horse.  Zayat said that his Preakness aspirations with Nehro were “a possibility, but not probable” despite the impressive showing at Churchill Downs last time out.

We’ll keep you guys updated on potential entries for the Preakness Stakes as we hear more information, and we hope you’ll check back for our picks on the winner and the trifecta on race day at Pimlico Race Course.  While the Kentucky Derby is a bit of a crap shoot with that huge field, we’ve had quite a bit more success in the Preakness Stakes and hope to duplicate the profitable horse betting strategy in the 2011 edition of the race.
