2011 PGA Championship Preview: Groups, Golf Odds, & Date
Written by Deborah Nicks

Tee time for the 2011 PGA Championship is fast approaching and we’ll preview the date, golf odds, and the best groups.
The 2011 PGA Championship will be held at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Georgia, and the date to get started at the Highlands Course is set for Thursday, August 11th. The event hasn’t been held at the Atlanta Athletic Club since 2001 when David Toms took home the win with a score of 270. Martin Kaymer shot a 277 to win the PGA Championship last year at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin, and the defending champion isn’t considered to be one of the top golfers for this year according to the betting odds being offered by online sportsbooks.
Rory McIlroy has never won this event but he is listed as the +935 betting favorite for the 2011 PGA Championship. Luke Donald and Lee Westwood have also never won a PGA Championship, but both are considered to be amongst the best bets this year at around +1200 each, respectively. Tiger Woods is sure to steal the show, and the PGA Championship winner in 1999, 2000, 2006, and 2007 can be had for +2100 if you think he’ll return to form. Other betting favorites include Phil Mickelson at +2100 and Dustin Johnson at +2233.
Two PGA Championship groups stand out above the rest and will be sure to garner much of the television time. Tiger Woods, Davis Love III, and Padraig Harrington have an 8:35 PM ET tee time, while Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke, and Charles Schwartzel get started at 1:45 PM ET. Matt Kuchar, Jason Day, and Lee Westwood form another strong group, while Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, and Rickie Fowler could easily produce a winner from theirs.
One interesting bet that I’ve been looking at is playing 2009 PGA Championship winner Y.E. Yang to finish higher than Webb Simpson. The wager pays out at +160 and Simpson has no wins since turning professional. Yang is a model of inconsistency but he always seems to up his game in the majors. On top of his 1st place finish in the PGA Championship, Yang also finished tied for 8th in the Masters in 2010. In 2011, Yang tied for 20th in the Masters, tied for 3rd in the U.S. Open, and tied for 16th in the Open Championship. Simpson has been playing some great golf lately but I’ll back experience and results over the well-rounded youngster’s game.
