MLB Opening Day Best Bet: Angels vs. Royals
Written by Jake Thompson
Thursday, 31 March 2011 18:30

MLB betting picks are ready in the game between the Angels and the Royals.
The Los Angeles Angels (0-0) and the Kansas City Royals (0-0) have an Opening Day MLB game that will be the focus of our betting picks. The Royals are the home team but have won just 1 of their last 4 home games against the Angels while losing outright in the 4 most recent head-to-head meetings in Los Angeles. That was enough for Las Vegas sportsbooks to make the Angels a medium-sized road favorite, and our free MLB picks will let you know if Los Angeles will be able to come through.
The first pitch is set for 4:10 PM ET and the starting pitchers are Jered Weaver for the Angels and Luke Hochevar for the Royals. Weaver is coming off a great season and has allowed just 2 earned runs on 19 hits over the last 22.0 innings he’s pitched against the Royals. Hochevar did not share Weaver’s success last year and has given up 12 earned runs on 18 hits over his 10.2 career innings against the Angels. Hochevar has also had a poor spring and it is tough to imagine him pitching solid innings this afternoon.
The weather doesn’t figure to play a large part in deciding the game between the Royals and the Angels. The wind is blowing out to left at less than 10 MPH and you should expect a cloudy game with around a 40% chance of showers in the early innings.
Although Kansas City does have some young hitters who have made great strides in spring training, you still have to think that the Angels’ starting lineup is more dangerous because of the veteran bats that have proven themselves at the Major League level. Alex Gordon and Billy Butler are a nice combination but Kansas City also has big holes in their lineup that will likely crush any effort they mount to score runs off of Weaver. Hochevar hasn’t been able to get outs against this team and, if his spring is any indication, is likely to happen again.
Our MLB picks will be on the Angels even though we really don’t like playing road favorites all that much. The fact of the matter is that Los Angeles has a huge edge in pitching to go along with an offense that is much more reliable than that of their adversary.
