Tennis News: Venus Williams Withdraws from 2011 U.S. Open

Venus Williams U.S. Open

Word is breaking now that Venus Williams has withdrawn from the 2011 U.S. Open tennis tournament.

Multiple sources are reporting that Venus Williams has withdrawn from the 2011 U.S. Open due to an unspecified illness.  Williams won the U.S. Open in 2000 and 2001 but came into the 2011 edition of the tennis tournament unseeded after missing quite a bit of time with a hip muscle injury.  Williams was originally going to participate in tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati earlier this year but had to withdraw with some form of a viral illness.

The “unspecified illness” that forced her to withdraw from the 2011 U.S. Open is supposed to be related to the viral illness that caused her to miss time previously.  Williams had been set to take on Sabine Lisicki in the 2nd round of the U.S. Open after defeating Vesna Dolonts 6-4, 6-3 in the first round.
