2011 British Open Golf Odds & Predictions

2011 British Open Odds

Let’s check out the 2011 British Open odds and see if we can’t make some predictions on the winner.

With Tiger Woods nursing an injury you have to assume that the field for the 2011 British Open title is wide open.  Online sportsbooks have the odds favoring U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy at 5/1, but the upstart Irishman is far from the only entry that is capable of conquering the always tough Royal St. George’s Golf Club.

Lee Westwood has had some success on this course before, and he’s available at 9/1.  Luke Donald has been playing well in recent tournaments and is the 3rd British Open betting choice at 10/1 odds.  After those first 3, the field starts to get a little trickier from a betting standpoint.  Martin Kaymer and Sergio Garcia each come in at 15/1 odds, followed by Graeme McDoweel and Nick Watney at 20/1, Phil Mickelson, Jason Day, and Charl Schwartzel at 25/1, and the duo of Ian Poulter and Matt Kuchar at 30/1.  Should none of the big names suit you, the field is available at 10/1 odds.

2010 British Open winner Louis Oosthuizen is a long shot to repeat according to the sportsbooks, and you can grab a piece of the action at 50/1 odds if you think he can duplicate his success at St. Andrews.  Ben Curtis and Greg Norman were the last two golfers to take home a British Open title on this course, but it doesn’t appear that either will be a major contender in the 2011 version of the event.  Padraig Harrington won the British Open in 2007 and 2008, and the 28/1 price on him seems to be a good value.

My favorite bet of the tournament has to be Bubba Watson at 50/1 odds.  Although he still has some holes in his game, I think this huge drives could find a way to conquer this course.  Greg Norman won the British Open at Royal St. George’s Golf Club back in 1993, and it was that huge driving ability that got him there.  Watson is far from a sure thing, but you can’t go wrong with a 50/1 payout on a guy that is theoretically built for the curse.
