2011 Del Mar Futurity: Odds, Post Positions, and Picks

Let’s preview the odds and post positions before making picks on the winner and trifecta in the 2011 Del Mar Futurity.

1 – Corsa Di Cavalli, 20-1

2 – Gun Boat, 8-1

3 – Sheer Talent, 12-1

4 – Majestic City, 5-2

5 – Basmati, 8-1

6 – Drill, 7-2

7 – Mighty Monsoon, 12-1

8 – Creative Cause, 9-5

2011 Del Mar Futurity Picks – Trifecta Box:

Creative Cause

Gun Boat

Majestic City

I won’t waste too much time here in including Del Mar Futurity favorites Majestic City and Creative Cause amongst the top 3.  They are simply too talented for most of the entries in this field and they are proven winners with no question marks.  I generally avoid taking favorites in my trifecta box but I’m just not seeing these two horses finishing out of the top 3.

Lots of horse bettors like Drill and Sheer Talent to pull the upset here but I’m not including them in my Del Mar Futurity picks.  Sheer Talent tried to ship elsewhere and his trainers don’t sound all that confident, while Drill has potential but has also shown to be a bit erratic with slower times than necessary to do great here.

The third leg of my Del Mar Futurity picks on the trifecta box came down to Gun Boat and Mighty Monsoon.  The latter is a deep closer that could probably use a bit more distance to be at 100%, while the former bested Basmati last time out in a very speedy 5 ½ furlongs.  We’ll take Gun Boat as the other horse but Mighty Monsoon could show big if anyone puts up a torrid pace.  I’m just not sure we see that happen on Wednesday, however.

2011 Del Mar Futurity Picks – Winner:

Gun Boat

We are rolling the dice on the decent-sized underdog to win the 2011 Del Mar Futurity.  His finishing time in his last go indicates that he’s capable of running as fast as the favorites, while his post position should have him in a perfect spot to compete.  Pace is a bit tricky to figure out here and the question marks could very well open up the upset for our 8-1 underdog in the Del Mar Futurity.
