2012 Donn Handicap: Odds, Post Positions, and Picks

Our preview of the 2012 Donn Handicap will include picks, as well as a look at the odds and post positions.

The 2012 Donn Handicap has attracted a talented field that is highlighted by Preakness Stakes winner Shackleford and Belmont Stakes winner Ruler On Ice, and this is a tough one to make horse racing picks on.  2011 Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Flat Out is also here, as is the undefeated Trickmeister who is coming off a big win at this very same Gulfstream Park.

2012 Donn Handicap Horse Racing Picks:

The dirt track at Gulfstream Park looks to be sloppy at post time this Saturday, and that weighs heavily into our picks on the Donn Handicap.  Gulfstream Park’s track has been catering to early pace horses and those close to the lead, and the deep closers haven’t had much success lately.  We’ll keep those 2 important tidbits in mind when making our picks.

With the track expected to be sloppy, you have to take Ruler On Ice in your Donn Handicap picks.  He loves racing in the rain and his post position should set him up nicely for whatever race he chooses to run.

Flat Out was a tough toss because of how well he ran in the slop in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, but ultimately I believe he’ll be too far off the lead to make a move in the wet stuff.  Shackleford’s pace-setting style should play in nicely here and I’m going to include him in my trifecta as well.

The last horse to include in your Donn Handicap trifecta picks is Redeemed at 12-1 odds.  Although Trickmeister is probably considered to be the better horse, I like the fact that Redeemed has longer odds and will be starting from a better spot in the starting gate.  He should have lasting power.

As far as the winner of the 2012 Donn Handicap goes, there simply is no better bet on the board than Ruler On Ice.  He has a great post position and is a proven slop runner.  Look for him to catch Shackleford in the final furlong before cruising to victory with a huge late push.
