College Football Predictions: Rutgers vs. Louisville Preview

Our preview of the college football game between Rutgers and Louisville will include predictions on the score.
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights (5-1) are trying to edge their way into the top 25 and our college football preview will let you know how they do in Friday’s game against the Louisville Cardinals (2-4). Although the respective records might suggest that Rutgers is the better squad, it is actually the home-team Cardinals that are 2-point favorites here according to 5Dimes Sportsbook. Start time is set for 8:00 PM ET and the game will be played live on ESPN2.
Louisville’s only victories this season have come over Murray State and Kentucky, while they’ve suffered losses against Florida International, Marshall, North Carolina, and Cincinnati. The Cardinals have played strong defense this year and are only allowing 17.7 points per game, but their offense has averaged only 16.3. Louisville does have a solid mix of the run and the pass but they’ve been unable to convert in the red zone.
Rutgers averages 30.3 points per game despite putting up just 2.0 more yards per game than the Cardinals. The Scarlet Knights run the ball poorly but they’ve received some strong quarterback play that has propelled them to success. The defense has been a big positive for Rutgers this year, and this side of the ball has allowed 16.0 points per game while showing well at stopping the run and the pass. The Scarlet Knights lost to North Carolina as 10-point underdogs but do have wins over North Carolina Central, Ohio, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, and Navy.

Louisville was a 40-13 winner over Rutgers in 2010, but they lost outright to the Scarlet Knights in 2008 and 2009. It’s obvious that the Rutgers offense is extremely overrated right now and I think they’ll have a tough go against a quality Louisville defense. The Cardinals are better than they’ve shown on the offensive side of things but they lack the killer instinct to make drives count. This all amounts to a low-scoring game that could go either way. Since Louisville is at home, we’ll call for them to win outright as Rutgers comes back down to Earth in a big way.
