College Football Predictions: SMU vs. Texas A&M Preview

SMU vs. Texas A&M

Our SMU vs. Texas A&M preview will make college football predictions on the final score.

Fox Sports Net will carry today’s 7:30 PM ET game between the SMU Mustangs (0-0) and the Texas A&M Aggies (0-0), and our preview will help sort out how this college football clash will play out.  SMU last played Texas A&M back in 2005 and it was the Aggies winning in dominating fashion with a final score of 66-8.  Much has changed with both college football programs since that day and things should go down a bit differently this time around.

Online sportsbooks have the SMU vs. Texas A&M odds favoring the Aggies at -16 with a total of 55.5.  Roughly 70% of tracked college football gamblers are taking Texas A&M to cover the large point spread and that consensus is one of the main reasons why the odds have moved up since opening at -14.  The Aggies have won quite a bit of money for sports bettors when at home, losing on the point spread in only 3 of their last 12 at Kyle Field.

Texas A&M no longer has Jerrod Johnson at quarterback, but new starter Ryan Tannehill played well during his game time last year and should be solid in this explosive offense.  SMU’s defense should have a nice season with plenty of guys back, but I’m just not sure if anyone is slowing down this Texas A&M attack.  The Mustangs will be improved statistically on defense this year but I don’t see them helping out their yearend tallies much in this game.

SMU has Kyle Padron back at quarterback and the Mustangs should be able to put up plenty of points in Coach June Jones’ passing attack.  SMU has been building for this year since Jones arrived on campus and they have nearly everyone back on offense from last season’s productive unit.  Texas A&M has a ton of experience coming back as well, but their inability to stop passing teams last year indicates that their scheme might run into trouble against SMU.

We have two high-scoring offenses here that are going against experienced and talented defenses.  Both of these squads should have big years and be vastly improved across the board.  Ultimately, I think that this one stays fairly close with the offenses proving to be stronger than their opposing defenses.  You’ll see plenty of scoring here and our predictions say to go with SMU and the over.
