College Football Predictions: WVU vs. Syracuse Preview

WVU Syracuse Football

It’s time to preview Friday’s college football game between WVU and Syracuse.

The #14 WVU Mountaineers (5-1) go on the road to take on the Syracuse Orangemen (4-2) on Friday, but the odds makers at Legends Sportsbook aren’t expecting this one to be close.  The road-team Mountaineers are 14-point betting favorites currently and close to 70% of tracked college football bettors are taking WVU.  Start time is set for 8:00 PM ET on ESPN and we hope that our score predictions help everyone figure out what to expect.

WVU has covered the point spread in 7 of the last 10 head-to-head meetings with Syracuse, and that helps to explain why so many are taking them to win big on Friday.  Syracuse had lost 8 straight against the Mountaineers before shocking the college football world in a 19-14 win as 13.5-point underdogs in last year’s meeting.

Syracuse has bested Wake Forest, Rhode Island, Toledo, and Tulane this year, but has losses against USC and Rutgers.  The Orangemen have a balanced offense that averages 26.7 points per game, and Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib (1294 yards, 64.6%, 11 TD, 4 INT) has been very good.  WVU’s defense is only allowing 21.5 points per game but I feel they are very overrated after facing poor offenses for much of the season.

WVU’s only loss of the year came against LSU, while their wins over Marshall, Norfolk State, Maryland, Bowling Green, and Connecticut have them approaching the top 10.  The Mountaineers have a dynamite offense that averages nearly 400 passing yards and 40.8 points per game.  Quarterback Geno Smith (2159 yards, 64.0%, 16 TD, 3 INT) has been excellent, and this is team that is close to impossible to stop from scoring.  Syracuse’s defense allows 293.0 passing yards a game and can definitely be exploited by the Mountaineers.

Although WVU will definitely score their share of points here, I believe that the Orangemen have the offense to keep up.  The Mountaineers won’t be able to pull away and that means Syracuse will be able to run the ball instead of abandoning their game plan.  I still expect the Mountaineers to win, but will call for the game to be much closer than the odds makers seem to think.

WVU vs. Syracuse Score Predictions:
