Friday MLB Best Bet: Rockies vs. Pirates

Troy Tulowitzki

The MLB best bet for Friday is in the Rockies and Pirates game.

Las Vegas sportsbooks have the road-team Colorado Rockies (4-1) as medium-sized favorites against the Pittsburgh Pirates (4-3), and our Friday MLB best bet will tell you which team is likely to come out on top in this National League tilt.  Colorado has won 3 of the last 4 games against the Pirates will all 4 clashes being played in Pittsburgh.

Starting pitchers for today’s game are left-hander Jorge De La Rosa (1-0, 0.75 WHIP, 0.00 ERA) for the Rockies and right-hander Ross Ohlendorf (0-0, 2.00 WHIP, 6.00 ERA) for the Pirates.  Pittsburgh is hitting .247 on the year but only .067 against lefties, while the Rockies have batted .260 with a .254 average against right-handed pitching.  The Rockies have actually been stronger away from Coors field and their .289 road average best the poor .133 mark that Pittsburgh has amassed in their only home game.

De La Rosa opened up his 2011 MLB season with a dominant victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks that saw him go 5.1 innings with 3 hits and 0 runs allowed.  He gave up 5 runs on 11 hits over 12.1 innings pitched against the Pirates last season while losing both games.  Over his last 5 starts against Pittsburgh, he’s won 3 while giving up an average of 2.2 earned runs per game.

Ohlendorf started his year with a trip to Wrigley Field where he allowed the Cubs to score 4 earned runs on 8 hits and 4 walks over 6 innings.  He’s started 4 career games against the Rockies and has been very tough to score in since his first meeting resulted in 6 earned runs.  His last 3 matchups against Colorado have seen the Pirates go 3-0 with Ohlendorf allowing 4 earned runs on 13 hits over 12.2 innings pitched.

Colorado’s bullpen has a 1.65 ERA on the season while Pittsburgh’s has been solid with a 3.79 ERA.  Ultimately, I have more faith in the Rockies to hit Ohlendorf than I do in the Pirates to hit De La Rosa.  The only thing that worries me slightly is that De La Rosa left his last start with a blister, but he is saying that he will be at 100% for this game.  Pittsburgh looks better than they have in years but they still don’t have much of an offense and that will cost them against a Rockies squad that can swing the lumber.
