Friday MLB Best Bet: Tigers vs. Twins

Tigers Porcello

It’s time for predictions in Friday’s MLB best bet game between the Twins and the Tigers.

The Detroit Tigers (71-59) and the Minnesota Twins (55-75) have an 8:10 PM ET start time today and the American League Central clash has been selected as the MLB best bet for Friday.  Online sportsbooks have the MLB odds favoring the road-team Tigers at -127 with a total of 9.5 runs.  Close to 70% of tracked MLB bettors are placing their wagers on Detroit and we’ll let you know if the road favorite will be able to get a win on Friday.

Starting pitchers in the Tigers vs. Twins game will be right-hander Rick Porcello (11-8, 1.44 WHIP, 5.17 ERA) going for Detroit and left-hander Scott Diamond (0-1, 1.42 WHIP, 4.26 ERA) taking the mound for Minnesota.  Porcello hasn’t been sharp lately (11.48 ERA over his last 3 starts) and got hit hard by Minnesota last week.  That being said, Porcello has also won 4 of his last 5 starts against the Twins and usually throws quality innings against them.  Diamond’s only career MLB start came earlier in the year when he allowed 3 earned runs over 6.1 innings against the Indians.  He’s been decent in the minor leagues and will use his fastball/curve combo in an attempt to induce ground balls.

The Tigers have defeated the Twins in 13 of their last 16 head-to-head meetings and Detroit is also the hotter-hitting squad by a large margin, batting .282 over their last 10 games while Minnesota is at just .224.  The Tigers hit lefties as well as righties this season so the fact that Diamond is a southpaw doesn’t seem important either way for handicapping purposes.  Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera is listed as probable (personal) while Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer is questionable (neck).

I don’t see any way to bet on this game other than to go with the Tigers to win.  They are the only team that is hitting, they have a more established starter on the mound, and their bullpen is quite a bit more reliable than Minnesota’s.  Detroit has won 7 of their last 10 games while Minnesota has lost 8 of their last 10.  The Tigers have something to play for and are just playing better baseball.
