MLB Opening Day Best Bet: Reds vs. Brewers

edinson volquez

Opening Day MLB picks are ready in the game between the Reds and the Brewers.

The best bet to make on MLB’s Opening Day schedule is going to be in the game between the Milwaukee Brewers (0-0) and the Cincinnati Reds (0-0).  Las Vegas has the home-team Reds as small betting favorites with the total set at over or under 8 runs.  This Thursday game will start early and you’ll want to put in your action before the 2:10 PM ET time of the first pitch.

Two right-handed starting pitchers will be on the mound for this game with Yovani Gallardo of the Brewers going against Edinson Volquez of the Reds.  Gallardo has been sharp in spring ball but it is a major concern that he has given up 13 earned runs on 19 hits and 4 walks over his last 2 starts against Cincinnati.  Volquez has struggled to regain his pre-injury form this spring and it might be a tough start considering the velocity doesn’t seem to have returned to the younger’s arm.  Volquez has given up 20 earned runs over his last 5 starts against the Brewers and could be in for a tough outing.

Both starting pitchers have some question marks surrounding their potential performances and that is bad news because of how many great hitters the Brewers and Reds have on their rosters.  These teams are plenty capable of hitting home runs in bunches and it doesn’t help matters that Cincinnati’s park is one of the best in Major League Baseball in terms of hitting the long ball.  The Reds have won 11 of the last 14 head-to-head meetings with the Brewers, and the winning team has scored 5 or more runs in 6 of the last 8 meetings in Cincinnati.

What this means for our best bet is that it is very possible that one or both of these teams put up a large amount of runs in this Opening Day MLB clash.  The total is set low at 8 runs and I have to back the over with so many question marks surrounding each starting pitcher and their ability to throw quality innings here.  Both bullpens have issues as well, and that means that the total could easily go over in the later innings if the starters perform better than expected.

Brewers 6
Reds 5
