Monday MLB Best Bet: Marlins vs. Diamondbacks
Written by Jake Thompson

The Diamondbacks and Marlins will be featured in our MLB best bet for Monday.
The Florida Marlins (30-21) might have the superior record this year, but that isn’t stopping the online sportsbooks from making the Arizona Diamondbacks (29-24) the small betting favorite in this tilt. Arizona is at home and sports a 16-10 record at Chase Field this season, but Florida’s stellar 16-9 road mark suggests that they could easily pull off the upset.
Florida and Arizona each won 3 of the 6 head-to-head meetings last season, while the over has hit in just 1 of the last 8 clashes. The big news surrounding this tilt is that Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez is set to miss out on the game. The star player tried to play Sunday with a back injury but was forced to leave after the second inning and is currently listed as doubtful.
The Marlins have hit just .239 over the course of their last 10 games, and the loss of Ramirez isn’t going to do anything to help this team offensively. Florida will be going against Joe Saunders (1-5, 1.53 WHIP, 4.65 ERA), and the lefty has never faced the Marlins in his career. Florida hasn’t hit southpaws any better than right-handers, but Saunders could run into trouble against a heavy hitter like Florida outfielder Mike Stanton since he likes to give up the long ball.
Right-hander Chris Volstad (2-3, 1.46 WHIP, 5.40 ERA) draws the start for the Marlins, and this former top prospect has not looked good all season. Although Volstad is coming off a quality outing, his stuff has just been far too hittable and he’s had limited success against the Diamondbacks in previous seasons. Arizona is hitting just .243 on the season, but .259 at home and .265 over the course of their last 10 games. Although Volstad could put in quality innings, he’s a risky bet for any sort of long-term success with the mediocre stuff he’s been throwing this year.
The Diamondbacks are tiny home favorites and I think the best bet to make is to go with them to get the win. Saunders and Volstad are both tough pitchers to back because they don’t always bring their best stuff, but ultimately it’s Saunders who is more reliable. He also has the better offense backing him up, and the loss of Hanley doesn’t hurt either.
