Monday MLB Best Bet: Reds vs. Astros

Hunter Pence

We’ll tell you the winner of today’s Astros and Reds game in our Monday MLB best bet.

The Cincinnati Reds (18-16) are medium-sized road betting favorites in this evening’s 8:05 PM ET game with the Houston Astros (13-21), and we’ll let you know if the online sportsbook have the line right in our Monday MLB best bet.  Houston’s 7-9 home record isn’t as strong as the 8-7 mark that Cincinnati has accumulated on the road this season, and the Reds have won 6 of the last 9 head-to-head meetings against the Astros.

Houston is starting right-hander Aneury Rodriguez (0-0, 1.15 WHIP, 4.15 ERA) and it is extremely important for the converted reliever to find a way to go deep into this game because the Astros’ bullpen has been a disaster this season.  Rodriguez’s only career start was a 5-inning, 1 hit shutout of these same Reds a week ago, but you should expect Cincinnati to hit much stronger after seeing the youngster’s stuff once.  The Reds hit only .223 on the road this year but their power hitters are a nice matchup for Houston’s small ballpark.

Left-hander Travis Wood (1-3, 1.54 WHIP, 6.21 ERA) gets the nod for the Reds and he’ll be going against an Astros squad that hits .306 against lefties at home.  Wood has either been extremely good or extremely bad in his starts this season and he’s fresh off a 6-inning, 2 earned runs allowed effort against the Astros.  Wood has gone 6 innings each exactly in all 3 of his career starts against Houston and he should find a way to put in decent but unspectacular innings tonight.  The good news for the Reds is that their bullpen has been much more consistent and should be able to properly deal with their starting pitcher not going 7+ innings.

The fact of the matter is that Rodriguez is simply not ready to be a regular starting pitcher and his pure stuff and command are a long way off.  Some are being swayed by his start against the Reds a week ago but I feel he’s a good bet to last less than 5 innings before a troubled bullpen comes in to make this game completely ugly.  Wood isn’t exactly polished either but he should do well enough to get Cincinnati the win tonight.
