Monday MLB Best Bet: Rockies vs. Mets

mike pelfrey

We’ve selected the Mets and Rockies game for Monday’s MLB best bet.

The Colorado Rockies (6-2) have been red hot to start the season and our MLB best bet for Monday night will let you know if they’ll get by the New York Mets (4-5) in this 7:10 PM ET game.  New York will be the home team and the Las Vegas Sportsbooks have installed the Mets as very small betting favorites.  The Rockies have won just 4 of their last 27 games when traveling to play the Mets and are dealing with a slew of injuries and illnesses heading into tonight’s game.  First baseman Todd Helton (back) and center fielder Carlos Gonzalez (flu) are currently listed as doubtful, while third baseman Ian Stewart (flu) is listed as questionable.

Right-hander Jason Hammel (1-0, 1.80 WHIP, 7.20 ERA) will take the mound for the Rockies and this guy hasn’t put together anything close to quality start over his last 6 starts dating back to last season.  He can pitch some surprisingly good games at times, but has given up 9 earned runs on 15 hits over his last two starts against the Mets.

New York will counter with right-hander Mike Pelfrey (0-1, 2.68 WHIP, 15.63 ERA) and I’m very interested to see if this guy can rebound after two disastrous starts to kick off the 2011 MLB season.  Although some are speculating that the shoulder injury that hindered Pelfrey during last year is possibly back, but I don’t buy it.  He had a terrific spring and sometimes it just takes guys a start or two before they get it all together.  Pelfrey has won 5 of his last 6 starts against the Rockies while allowing 0 earned runs and only 17 hits over his last 21.1 innings pitched in New York against Colorado.

Pelfrey should put in quality innings in his first home start of the year and I just can’t see the Rockies hurting him with all the guys they have sitting out or dealing with flu symptoms.  New York’s .246 average on the season beats the .241 mark of the Rockies, and our Monday MLB best bet will be on the Mets to get a big win.  Sometimes the Las Vegas odds makers put up bad numbers and I personally feel this one is way off.
