Monday MLB Best Bet: Royals vs. Padres
Written by Jake Thompson

The Royals and the Padres will do battle in our MLB best bet for Monday.
Online sportsbooks have the San Diego Padres (34-45) as a -143 betting favorite for their late 10:05 PM ET clash with the Kansas City Royals (33-45), and this one has been bet up quite a bit since the odds opened up at around -129. Kansas City has been a nice success story this year, but their 10-21 road record is still behind the Padres’ 16-27 home mark. San Diego has actually played better on the road this season, while these two teams last met up in the 2004 season when the Padres swept their adversary.
It’s no secret that San Diego has been struggling to hit at PETCO Park this year (.209 average), but they are showing a little bit of a bounce back after batting .253 over the course of their 10 most recent games. This is a team that has hit lefties much better than righties this year and Kansas City is throwing a southpaw in the form of Jeff Francis (3-8, 1.40 WHIP, 4.76 ERA) tonight. Francis faced San Diego quite a bit during his years with the Colorado Rockies, but he also gave up 13 earned runs over the 11.0 innings in last three starts against them have entailed; all resulting in losses.
Mat Latos (4-8, 1.40 WHIP, 4.22 ERA) gets the nod for the Padres, and last year’s ace has struggled to get back to form after finding himself injured and on the disabled list for the first part of the year. He still isn’t at 100%, but has done very well in his massive home park and should be able to put in quality innings here. Kansas City has never faced Latos and has hit just .253 on the road this season. The Royals come into tonight’s matchup with a .269 average over their last 10 games, but with San Diego’s bullpen sporting a 2.60 ERA on the season it might be tough for Kansas City to generate much offense.
It’s always a little scary betting on the Padres as favorites because of that poor offense, but ultimately Francis is a pitcher that they should be able to score some runs on. Kansas City’s road offense and this huge ballpark won’t have them crossing many base runners across home plate, and I have to believe that San Diego is the best bet to make in this interleague game.
