NFL Preseason Preview: Jets vs. Texans Game Picks

It’s time to preview the Jets vs. Texans NFL preseason game with betting odds and final score predictions.
ESPN is set to televise the 8:00 PM ET NFL preseason game between the Houston Texans (0-0) and the New York Jets (0-0), and our preview will hopefully make the correct predictions. We’ve started out our NFL preseason betting with 3 straight wins and are looking for another one in this Monday night clash. Online sportsbooks have the NFL odds favoring the home-team Texans at -2.5 on the point spread and a total of 34.5.
The New York Jets are planning to only play their starters for the first quarter and it will be interesting to see if they show anything other than a vanilla offense here. They have the running game to get on the scoreboard in the 1st quarter but their chances after that don’t look as bright. Backup quarterback Mark Brunell is injured so Greg McElroy and Drew Willy will see lots of time. I just don’t see the Jets scoring many points here and defenses are typically ahead of offenses at this stage in the NFL preseason. Rex Ryan has an 0-2 record in week 1 of the preseason and just doesn’t seem to have his team going that hard this early in the year.
Houston is unlikely to get starting quarterback Matt Schaub more than a few plays but I could see them trying to move the ball when backup Matt Leinhart comes in. The Jets have a great defense and I’m not sure how successful he’ll be, but Leinhart needs the snaps and experience to get used to his new offense. T.J. Yates should see significant playing time in the 2nd half and I don’t think he’ll have much success because of his inexperience.
Ultimately I’m looking for a low-scoring game here where the Texans manage to get the win. It’s very possible that we’ll have a scoreless second half and there is plenty of value in playing the under at 34.5 points. New York won’t do much with their inexperienced quarterbacks, and I don’t think they take too many risks with those guys since Brunell is already dinged. The Texans could let Leinart take some chances but they are going against a top defense that should be able to limit what they do.
