Saturday MLB Best Bet: Mariners vs. Rays
Written by Jake Thompson

Let’s try for our 3rd straight MLB best bet victory in Saturday’s game between the Rays and the Mariners.
The Seattle Mariners (53-70) and the Tampa Bay Rays (67-56) will meet up in our Saturday MLB best bet and the online sportsbooks definitely favor one team in this game. The home-team Rays are -190 betting favorites currently with a total of 8.5 runs for this American League clash. Seattle’s poor 23-39 road record has quite a bit to do with that number, as does the fact that Tampa Bay has won 8 of their last 10 games this season heading into Saturday.
The Rays sit 9.0 games in back of the New York Yankees in the American League East and 8.5 games in back of the Boston Red Sox in the American League wild card standings. Still, Tampa Bay is playing hard and will have right-hander Jeremy Hellickson (10-8, 1.18 WHIP, 3.22 ERA) on the mound here. The prospect has met expectations this season and has allowed just 2 earned runs over the 14.1 innings he’s pitched against the Mariners this year (both wins). Seattle has a slew of offensive injuries and it’s a minor miracle that they’ve batted as high as .263 over their last 10 games.
It’s important for the Mariners to get quality innings from their starters because their bullpen has been unreliable (1.35 WHIP, 3.99 ERA). Seattle will go with left-hander Charles Furbush (3-4, 1.46 WHIP, 4.01 ERA) and he’s been decent since coming over from the Detroit Tigers earlier this season. Furbush has never faced the Rays but he’s pitched well in all of his Mariner starts except for a tough road matchup with the Texas Rangers. The Rays hit .245 against southpaws this season but have only hit .231 overall during the course of their last 10 games.
With the Rays hitting so poorly, a part of me wants to take a shot on the Mariners as such large underdogs. It’s a decent bet to make, but ultimately the under looks like the best wager out of all the options. Hellickson should shut down a light-hitting Seattle squad while Furbush is sturdy enough to put in quality innings against Tampa’s ineffective offense. The bullpens are a bit unpredictable but we are in a pitcher’s park with two teams that simply don’t score many runs.
