Saturday MLB Best Bet: Padres vs. Diamondbacks
Written by Jake Thompson

Saturday’s MLB best bet game will be the clash between the Padres and the Diamondbacks.
We won’t have to worry about Hurricane Irene cancelling our Saturday MLB best bet, and there is a nice wager to make it in the National League West clash between the San Diego Padres (60-72) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (73-59). Online sportsbooks have the home-team Diamondbacks as -140 favorites with the total set at 9.5 runs. Arizona has a 3.0 game lead over the San Francisco Giants right now and will be looking for their 5th straight win in this 8:10 PM ET matchup with the Padres.
There are a couple reasons to expect the Padres to struggle tonight. They’ve won just 34 of their last 109 games played in Arizona and San Diego starting pitcher Aaron Harang (12-3, 1.45 WHIP, 3.96 ERA) is a fly ball pitcher going against a free-swinging club with some power. That being said, Harang hasn’t allowed more than 2 runs against Arizona in any of his last 10 starts and has been nearly unhittable when pitching at Chase Field. With the Diamondbacks hitting a woeful .199 over their last 10 games, I’d say another quality start is on the way.
Arizona will counter with veteran left-hander Joe Saunders (8-11, 1.35 WHIP, 3.98 ERA), a pitcher who rarely dominates but is generally putting his team in a position to win. Saunders has a 7.00 ERA over his last 3 starts and has allowed 5 earned runs over his 2 starts against San Diego this year. The Padres are not a big offensive team but they’ve been much stronger against southpaws and come into this game hitting .270 over their last 10.
The Diamondbacks definitely need the win here to keep their playoff dreams in good shape, but ultimately the Padres have to be the play. They have the better starting pitcher and are actually hitting. Arizona is getting some sneaky wins but I have to believe they drop this one and let the Giants even up the playoff race a bit. I’m also going to recommend making a bet on the under since both bullpens are strong and the offensive potential of these two clubs is nothing to be afraid of.
