Saturday MLB Best Bet: Red Sox vs. Yankees
Written by Jake Thompson

The Yankees and Red Sox will play in our Saturday MLB best bet game.
Online sportsbooks have listed the New York Yankees (20-16) as small betting favorites for today’s American League East clash with the Boston Red Sox (18-20), and we’ll breakdown both squads in hopes of providing a winner in our Saturday MLB best bet. New York is at home tonight and their 13-9 home record easily trumps the 7-11 mark that Boston has amassed on the road this season. The Red Sox have claimed victories in 8 of the last 11 head-to-head meetings with the Yankees and you won’t want to miss this 7:10 PM ET game.
Boston will start Josh Beckett (2-1, 0.88 WHIP, 1.99 ERA) for this one and the right-hander has led the Red Sox to victories in 11 of his last 16 starts against New York. The Yankees have hit a surprisingly low .248 this year but have rocked Beckett numerous times in the past despite not being able to win many of those games. New York is relying on the long ball to drive in runs this year and Beckett is a guy that gives up lots of home runs at times, so the Yankees could definitely exceed expectations against a guy that has been dominant for much of the season.
New York is going with staff ace C.C. Sabathia (3-2, 1.34 WHIP, 2.89 ERA) and the large lefty has only won 2 of his last 5 starts against Boston despite pitching better than Beckett has in many of his wins against the Yankees. Sabathia has been putting too many guys on base this year but also has found ways to work out of bad situations when he puts himself in trouble. The Red Sox have only hit .254 this year (.260 against left-handers), but Boston is finally breaking out of their early season slump and has batted .283 over their last 10 games.
Boston might be playing at less than 100% for this one with right fielder J.D. Drew expected to get the day off to rest and center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury expected to play after tweaking his knee last time out. The Red Sox have bullpen issues and I trust Mariano Rivera and the Yankees’ relievers quite a bit more than their foes in the Boston ‘pen. Ultimately, I think New York can get to Beckett while Sabathia is a safer bet to put in quality innings. I’m going with the Yankees to win as small home favorites and expect Beckett to see his WHIP and ERA adjusted back to reasonable levels after a string of strong performances.
