Sunday MLB Best Bet: Athletics vs. Mariners
Written by Jake Thompson
Sunday, 24 April 2011 18:37

Our Sunday MLB best bet is in the game between the Athletics and the Mariners.
The 4:10 PM ET showdown between the Oakland Athletics (10-11) and the Seattle Mariners (8-14) will be the MLB best bet for Sunday, and this is one of our favorite wagers of the entire month. Oakland’s 6-6 road record is actually superior to the 5-7 home mark of the Mariners, and that is part of the reason why online sportsbooks have made the Athletics small betting favorites in this afternoon’s game. Close to 70% of tracked MLB bettors are taking Oakland today and we’ll let you know if the majority is going to be on the right side of this wager.
Oakland has won 6 of the last 8 head-to-head clashes with the Mariners when the game was in Seattle, but the Athletics lost 4 of 6 overall meetings between the teams last season. Seattle’s bullpen has been horrendous this season (5.06 ERA) and it’s very important that their starting pitcher goes deep into games to help mask the weakness.
Seattle will turn to right-hander Doug Fister (1-3, 1.28 WHIP, 3.60 ERA) today and he should be good for 6+ quality innings against a light-hitting Oakland squad. Fister has dominated in 7 of his 8 career starts against the Athletics and will likely have another good effort today.
Oakland will counter with star left-hander Brett Anderson (1-1, 1.05 WHIP, 1.63 ERA) and he’s already dominated the Mariners once this season (6.0 IP, 5 hits, 1 earned run). Seattle is hitting just .224 on the season and can’t score runs at all right now. Complicating matters even worse is that Anderson has allowed just 10 earned runs over 10 career starts against Seattle. The Mariners will have to get a bit lucky if they want to put up any runs against this guy.
With both teams struggling to score, I think the smart bet is to play the home underdog Seattle Mariners and hope that their bullpen doesn’t blow it in the later innings. Fister may not be as talented as Anderson but he doesn’t have to be against a team that is struggling to score runs like the Athletics. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if this game was knotted at 0 after 5 innings, and the under might be worth a look despite being set ridiculously low at 6.5 runs.
Athletics 1
Mariners 2
