Sunday MLB Best Bet: Braves vs. Phillies

Cole Hamels

We’ve selected the game between the Phillies and the Braves as our Sunday MLB best bet.

The ESPN-televised game between the Atlanta Braves (19-16) and the Philadelphia Phillies (22-10) will be our MLB best bet for Sunday, and you will want to ride along with our betting picks.  Although the Phillies have amassed a strong 13-6 home record this season, the Braves have put together an impressive 10-9 road mark of their own.  The Braves have won just 3 of their last 8 head-to-head meetings with the Phillies but have been winners in 6 of their last 7 overall this year.

Left-hander Cole Hamels (4-1, 1.01 WHIP, 2.66 ERA) gets the start for Philadelphia today and he has won 6 of his last 8 against the Braves.  Hamels has been dominant this season and has given up just 1 earned run over his last 17 innings pitched versus Atlanta.  The Braves hit just .213 against lefties this year so it appears that Hamels is likely to have another very strong start in tonight’s game.

Hamels will be opposed by Jair Jurrjens (3-0, 1.01 WHIP, 1.52 ERA) in this one and the 25-year-old starter hasn’t given up more than 2 earned runs over his last 4 starts.  Jurrjens has given up only 9 earned runs over his last 6 starts against the Phillies and he’s likely to put in another strong start with the Phillies hitting just .253 this season.

With both teams having strong bullpens, this one sets up to be a low-scoring affair with both starters putting in quality innings.

Hamels is unhittable lately and I like him to out-duel Jurrjens and take home the money for those that back Philadelphia as medium-sized betting favorites.  Jurrjens is a strong pitcher but he’s a much more likely bet to give up a few runs.
