Sunday MLB Best Bet: Mets vs. Phillies
Written by Jake Thompson
Sunday, 01 May 2011 18:19

The Sunday MLB best bet will be in the game between the Mets and the Phillies.
The 8:00 PM ET late game between the New York Mets (11-16) and the Philadelphia Phillies (18-8) has been selected as the Sunday MLB best bet. Nearly 70% of tracked MLB bettors are taking the home-team Phillies as large favorites and we’ll let you know if the online sportsbook were correct in setting Philadelphia at such large odds.
New York comes into tonight’s game with a 6-8 record on the road while Philadelphia brings in 9-4 home mark. The Mets and Phillies played 5 times this season with Philadelphia winning 4 of the head-to-head clashes after claiming wins in 7 of 15 clashes against New York in the previous season. New York has now lost 3 straight games heading into tonight while the Phillies have claimed wins in 3 straight.
Philadelphia will turn to left-hander Cliff Lee (2-2, 1.05 WHIP, 4.18 ERA), and the offseason free agent addition has had some issues this year. Although he’s put together 3 straight positive starts, Lee doesn’t appear to have his grade-A stuff at this early point of the season. The good news for Lee is that the Mets hit just .208 against lefties. The bad news for Lee is that the Mets are hitting .271 over their last 10 games and should be able to better utilize their power in Philadelphia’s tiny ball park.
New York will counter with right-hander Chris Young (1-0, 1.06 WHIP, 2.65 ERA) and the oft-injured veteran has been very solid but has also missed time with injuries. He went 5.1 innings of 1 run ball against the Phillies earlier this season and has actually pitched quite well at Citizens Bank Park over the years. Then again, Lee’s only career start against the Mets saw him go 7 innings and not allow a single earned run, so we may just have a pitcher’s duel on our hands.
The Phillies are hitting just .234 over their last 10 game but the fact that they hit .274 at home makes me think that they’ll start putting it together after a recent stretch of road games. Although Lee is a dominant pitcher when he is on, I just feel that he hasn’t gotten his elite control perfected just yet and that makes the Mets the play tonight. Although they do struggle to hit at times, I think a few runs might be all they need if Young puts in solid innings like he did just weeks ago against Philadelphia.
Mets 4
