Sunday MLB Best Bet: Reds vs. Braves

Jair Jurrjens

The Reds and Braves will battle it out in our MLB best bet for Sunday.

An upset might be brewing in the 8:00 PM ET game between the Cincinnati Reds (27-26) and the Atlanta Braves (29-24), and our Sunday MLB best bet will help you decipher what wager to make.  Online sportsbooks have the home-team Braves as -130 betting favorites, but some big money has been put down on the Reds after the line opened up at -145.  We’ll take a look at both teams and help our readers decide what to bet on in Sunday’s late game.

The Reds come into this game as winners of only 2 of their last 10 overall, but have won 9 of the last 14 head-to-head meetings with the Braves.  Atlanta is also struggling a bit, winning in only 5 of their last 10 this season.  Atlanta right fielder Jason Heyward is on the disabled list with inflammation in his right shoulder, and the Braves are hitting just .239 over their last 10 games.

Cincinnati will turn to right-hander Johnny Cueto (2-1, 1.14 WHIP, 2.19 ERA) to take on the light-hitting Braves.  Cueto has allowed 7 earned runs over 18.1 innings in his 3 career starts against Atlanta, but he’s pitching so well right now that a dominant effort is to be expected.  Cincinnati’s bullpen has a 3.40 ERA on the year and is solid for the most part, so I don’t expect Atlanta to score many runs in this contest.

Opposing Cueto will be Atlanta starter Jair Jurrjens (6-1, 1.02 WHIP, 1.56 ERA) who has also been phenomenal after coming back from injury.  Cincinnati’s .257 average on the year easily beats out the Braves’ .239 mark, but the Reds are batting just .240 over their last 10 games.

Jurrjens gave up 5 earned runs in his last start against Cincinnati, but allowed just 3 runners to score over 7 innings in his only home start against this squad.  Atlanta’s bullpen has been terrific and isn’t likely to allow any late runs when the starter leaves the game.

Although I expect Jurrjens to throw some quality innings tonight, the best bet to make has to be on Cincinnati as the underdog.  Cueto is throwing very well lately and the Braves are simply not hitting much this month.  I’ll gladly take the underdog in a situation like this, and I’m calling for the Reds to win a low-scoring game.
