Sunday MLB Best Bet: Rockies vs. Cardinals
Written by Jake Thompson
Sunday, 14 August 2011 16:15

The game between the Cardinals and Rockies will be the MLB best bet for Sunday.
The Colorado Rockies (56-65) are visiting the St. Louis Cardinals (64-56) in Sunday’s 8:05 PM ET late game, and this National League clash has been selected as the MLB best bet. Online sportsbooks have the home-team Cardinals as the -155 betting favorites to go with a total of 8.5 runs. MLB bet-tracking websites show that close to 70% of bettors are taking St. Louis and we’ll let you know if they are making the correct choice here.
The Rockies have dropped 7 of the last 9 head-to-head meetings and will toss out Esmil Rogers (6-1, 1.72 WHIP, 5.85 ERA) as their starting pitcher here. Rogers keeps getting away with a sky-high WHIP and it’s only a matter of time before those base runners start to score. St. Louis has hit .266 over their last 10 games and hit well against Rogers last season (4.0 IP, 7 H, 1 BB, 2 ER).
The Cardinals will go with newly acquired Edwin Jackson (1-1, 1.60 WHIP, 4.95 ERA), and the right-hander has been hit or miss since the trade. He’s pitched amazingly in St. Louis but has also given up 32 earned runs over his 5 career start against the Rockies. Colorado is hitting .284 over their last 10 games and you never really know how a team will do against Jackson when he is in one of these up-and-down streaks.
One thing that we can count on is that the Cardinals’ relief pitchers have an edge. Sporting a 1.09 WHIP and 2.60 ERA on the season, St. Louis’ bullpen looks much better than their Colorado adversaries. The Rockies have a combined bullpen WHIP of 1.23 and a combined ERA of 3.59, making Colorado more likely to give up runs late in this contest.
You never quite know when Jackson is going to throw a good game, but I like how well he’s pitched at his new home in St. Louis. Rogers is just asking for a bad outing and the Cardinals have the plate patience to take full advantage of his inability to locate properly. I never like to go with the favorite but in this case the Cardinals appear to be the correct wager.
