Sunday MLB Best Bet: Yankees vs. Cubs
Written by Jake Thompson
Sunday, 19 June 2011 14:15

Sunday’s late game between the Yankees and the Cubs will be our MLB best bet for today.
The New York Yankees (40-29) have their ace on the hill for this 8:05 PM ET clash, and we’ll let you know if it will be enough to overcome the Chicago Cubs (29-41). The Cubs are just 16-21 at home this season, and the online sportsbooks have made New York the large -180 betting favorites thanks to their 17-12 road record. Close to 70% of tracked MLB bettors are taking the Yankees, and our best bet for Sunday will let you know if the masses are on the right side of this meeting.
C.C. Sabathia (8-4, 1.23 WHIP, 3.28 ERA) is on the bump for New York today, and the large lefty gave up 4 earned runs over 7.0 innings in his only career start at Wrigley Field back in 2008. Sabathia threw a 9.0-inning shutout the last time he saw the Cubs, and Chicago is hitting just .236 over the course of their last 10 overall games. The good news for the Cubs is that they have hit .275 against southpaws this year, and Sabathia has given up 10 earned runs over the course of his last 2 starts.
The Yankees’ offense is hitting .301 over their last 10 games, but shortstop Derek Jeter will be missing his 6th game tonight after going on the disabled list with a strained right calf muscle. Chicago start Randy Wells (1-1, 1.58 WHIP, 5.62 ERA) gets the nod tonight, and the prospect has never faced the Yankees in his career. Wells puts too many batters on base but can occasionally pitch out of trouble thanks to some groundball tendencies. It was only a matter of time before the Yankees started hitting, and Wells could be in for a rough day if the recent trend continues.
If that prospect of New York hitting the cover off the ball wasn’t scary enough as is, the fact that Chicago’s bullpen carries a 1.38 WHIP into this matchup should be enough to get you on the Yankees. I’ve never been a fan of playing a big road favorite and will recommend going with the -1.5 run line here. Wells isn’t pitching well enough to limit a red hot Yankees’ offense, and this one could turn ugly in the first few innings.
