Sunday MLB Best Bet: Yankees vs. Red Sox
Written by Jake Thompson
Sunday, 07 August 2011 22:53

We’ll go for 9 in a row with the Sunday MLB best bet between the Yankees and the Red Sox.
The 8:05 PM ET clash between the New York Yankees (69-43) and the Boston Red Sox (69-43) has been selected as the MLB best bet for Sunday, and this looks like a nice wager to make. Boston is at home and favored by -156 according to the MLB odds offered at online sportsbooks, and close to 70% of tracked bettors are taking the Red Sox. The Yankees have won just once over the course of their last 9 games against their American League East rivals and will try to even up the score this evening.
The starting pitchers for tonight’s game will be Freddy Garcia (10-7, 1.30 WHIP, 3.22 ERA) going for the Yankees and Josh Beckett (9-4, 0.92 WHIP, 2.20 ERA) taking the mound for the Red Sox. Both pitchers have been lights out recently and these right-handers are not easy to score against. Beckett has won his last 4 starts against New York and has only allowed 2 earned over 21.0 innings pitched this season. Garcia has lost both of his starts against the Red Sox this season but has gotten the win in 2 of his last 3 tries while at Fenway Park.
New York has hit a blistering .318 over their last 10 games and doesn’t seem to be overly affected by the knee injury to third baseman Alex Rodriguez that has sidelined the slugger for 26 games. Boston is only hitting .260 over that time frame but the Red Sox have hit .301 at home this season. Although the Yankees have an excellent offense, their .247 road average against right-handers means that they may be unable to score runs off a pitcher of Beckett’s caliber.
Ultimately, this game comes down to how the starters match up against the opponent’s offense. Beckett has been pitching so well that you have to figure he’ll have a good start against New York despite the Yankees’ impressive batting of late. Garcia has had a nice year but his WHIP indicates that he’s due for a bad start, and I’m not thrilled with the fact that he’s allowed 8 earned runs over 7.0 innings pitched against the Red Sox this season. Boston is at home and should be able to figure out a way to get this win, and I’m going to lay the juice and take the Red Sox at higher odds than I generally invest in.
