Super Bowl XLVI Odds & Predictions

The NFL lockout won’t stop us from figuring out great bets on next year’s potential Super Bowl Champion.

Super Bowl XLVI odds are out and there are some incredible values to put money on if you know what to look for.  Everyone knows that teams like the Green Bay Packers (+740 odds), New England Patriots (+750), San Diego Chargers (+1050), Pittsburgh Steelers (+1450), and Atlanta Falcons (+1500) are going to be the favorites, but we are going to focus on some big underdogs that could turn things around in a hurry.  These teams will pay off in a big way if they can get on the right track, and we’ll point out the reasons why we believe a change is in order.

San Francisco 49ers at +5000

The main thing holding back the 49ers last year was poor quarterback play that resulted in turnovers.  The defensive statistics took a hit because of how often interceptions and fumbles led to them starting with their backs against the wall, but new coach Jim Harbaugh has shown he can turn quarterbacks around in a hurry.  Frank Gore and the running game have always been productive, and the quarterback taking care of the ball will help the offense score points while not hurting the defense with poor field position.  This team has great players on both sides of the ball and Harbaugh should shore up the huge weakness that has kept them from winning games.  It doesn’t hurt that they play in the weakest division in football and should easily make the NFL Playoffs.

New York Jets at +1800

This is a team that is fairly similar to the 49ers because of how well the team played with the exception of quarterback Mark Sanchez.  The running game was perhaps the best in the league, and the defense is a shutdown unit that makes other teams work hard to get a first down.  Sanchez is a year older and should show improvement, and if he can limit turnovers than the Jets should find themselves in the AFC Championship Game once again.

Detroit Lions at +4700

It has been so long since the Lions have been Super Bowl contenders that it feels weird listing them here.  They have one of the most talented young defensive lines the NFL has ever seen, and getting quarterback Matthew Stafford and his big arm healthy will greatly improve the offense.  Detroit is still very young, but they are chalk full of potential and could find their rhythm just in time for a big playoff push.

Kansas City Chiefs at +5000

Two things I look for when trying to find an underdog that could claim the Super XLVI title are a strong rushing attack and a defense that can be dominant at times.  Kansas City possesses both of those things and quarterback Matt Cassell should show improvement now that he is more experienced with the offense.  The Chiefs play in a fairly weak division and might not have to have a great record to get into the playoffs if San Diego has one of their usual slow starts.  The odds here just don’t match up with the potential that this team shows.
