Thursday MLB Best Bet: Mariners vs. Royals
Written by Jake Thompson

Thursday’s MLB best bet will be in the game between the Mariners and Royals.
The Seattle Mariners (4-8) and the Kansas City Royals (7-4) are our MLB best bet for Thursday, and this one should be a nice money maker. Online sportsbooks have made the home-team Royals as small betting favorites for the 8:10 PM ET game and Kansas City has won 4 of the last 6 head-to-head meetings against the Mariners. We’ll take a look at how both teams are playing and then release our Thursday MLB best bet at the end of the article.
Doug Fister (0-2, 1.37 WHIP, 2.31 ERA) will take the mound for the Mariners and he’s been surprisingly good at keeping runs off the board despite his poor record. That being said, Fister has also allowed plenty of batters to reach base and both of his starts were against poor hitting squads in the Oakland Athletics and the Cleveland Indians. Kansas City has been a pleasant surprise offensively this year and the Royals come into tonight’s game hitting .274 on the season. Seattle’s bullpen has an ERA of 5.46 on the year and doesn’t figure to provide much relief if Fister’s high WHIP runs him into trouble.
The Royals will counter with lefty Bruce Chen (1-0, 1.27 WHIP, 4.09 ERA) and this guy is one of the toughest starters in baseball to figure out. He doesn’t have great stuff but he’s tricky enough to keep some teams from touching the ball. Chen got hit hard by the Los Angeles Angels in his opener before rebounding to shutout the Detroit Tigers over 6 incredible innings. Chen went 7 innings and allowed only 3 hits and 1 run in his only start against the Mariners last year, and with Seattle hitting just .215 on the year and struggling to score, I think a similar start could be in the works for tonight.
Kansas City’s bullpen has held strong and comes into this game with a 3.07 ERA that makes me believe the team could hold onto the lead that should be there when Chen departs. Fister’s WHIP suggests that he is ready for a poor outing and I’m backing Kansas City to get this win as small betting favorites in their home park. It’s always scary to bet on Chen as a favorite since he’s tough to read, but all signs point to him having another strong outing against the Mariners.
