Thursday MLB Best Bet: Red Sox vs. Rangers

Rangers Red Sox

It’s time for predictions in our Thursday MLB best bet selection between the Red Sox and Rangers.

The Boston Red Sox (79-50) and the Texas Rangers (74-57) will clash on Thursday and the game has been selected as our MLB best bet.  Online sportsbooks have the home-team Rangers as -160 betting favorites with a total of 10 runs for the 8:05 PM ET clash.  The Red Sox have won just 4 of their last 15 games in Texas and only 4 of their last 14 overall against the Rangers.

It wasn’t long ago when these two American League squads were amongst the hottest-hitting teams in all of baseball, but things have cooled down for both lately.  Boston is without first baseman Kevin Youkilis (back) and right fielder J.D. Drew (shoulder) and has hit just .249 over their last 10 games, while Texas lost third baseman Adrian Beltre (hamstring) and has batted .259 over that same time span.  That being said, the Rangers play in a hitters’ park and 6 of the last 9 meetings between these two in Rangers Ballpark in Arlington have gone over the betting total.

Starting pitchers for Thursday’s game will be left-hander Andrew Miller (5-1, 1.81 WHIP, 4.99 ERA) going for Boston and right-hander Alexi Ogando (12-5, 1.12 WHIP, 3.30 ERA) going for Texas.  The Rangers have hit .294 against southpaws at home this year while Miller has never faced off against Texas.  Ogando, converted from the bullpen earlier this year, was amazing at the start of the season but has a 6.75 ERA over his last 3 starts.  Ogando has never faced the Red Sox and I’m a bit concerned that his arm is tiring since he is not used to all of these innings.

There is definitely a case to be made for betting on the Red Sox and hoping that Ogando’s struggles continue, but ultimately our Thursday MLB best bet will be on the game going over 10 runs.  I don’t believe either starting pitcher can be trusted to put in quality innings, while both offenses are capable of putting up double digit runs without any help from the other team.  In fact, 3 of the last 5 games between the Red Sox and Rangers have seen one team score 11 or more runs.
