Tuesday MLB Best Bet: Angels vs. Athletics

Oakland Coliseum

The Athletics and Angels will square off in our MLB best bet for Tuesday.

Online sportsbooks have made the Oakland Athletics (21-20) the medium-sized betting favorite against the Los Angeles Angels (22-20) for tonight’s 10:05 PM ET late game, and we’ve selected this American League West matchup as our Tuesday MLB best bet.  MLB bet-tracked websites are showing that a 60% consensus is going with the road-team Angels in this game and we’ll let you know if they are going to be correct.

The Angels have beaten Oakland in 6 of the past 8 head-to-head meetings, and the Athletics will start left-hander Gio Gonzalez (4-2, 1.31 WHIP, 2.68 ERA) in an effort to reverse that recent trend.  Gonzalez has been strong in nearly every start this season but did have a somewhat rough outing against the Angels earlier in the year.  This is a guy that always pitches well in the pitcher-friendly confines of Oakland’s home park, and I expect Gonzalez to have a quality start tonight.  The Angels have hit lefties to the tune of .282 on the year, but they are also now without center fielder Vernon Wells (groin) for a while and it leaves a hole in their starting lineup.

Los Angeles will go with young right-hander Tyler Chatwood (2-1, 1.54 WHIP, 3.67 ERA) and it will be interesting to see how this start goes down.  The Athletics are hitting just .234 on the year and .232 over their last 10 games, but Chatwood is a bad start waiting to happen because of how many batters he puts on base.  He’s been lucky many times this year and the Athletics have guys that are patient and could draw plenty of walks here.  This is the second time this season that Oakland is seeing Chatwood and I expect them to do better than the 3 runs they scored off of him over 5.1 innings a week or two ago.

Although the fact that the Angels have hit lefties so well does concern me, I think going up against Gonzalez in his home park will be too much for them.  They might get a couple of runs but I’m fully expecting Chatwood to have a poor outing and that should be enough for the Athletics to get the victory here.

Angels 2
