Tuesday MLB Best Bet: Orioles vs. Mariners

Erik Bedard

The Mariners and Orioles are the teams selected to be in our MLB best bet for Tuesday.

Although the Baltimore Orioles (24-28) and the Seattle Mariners (27-26) might not be World Series contenders, their 10:10 PM ET clash is the best bet of the day when it comes to plunking down cash on some Tuesday baseball action.  Seattle has been a huge surprise this year, and they’ll put their 14-13 home record on the line against the Orioles tonight.  Baltimore comes in at just 9-14 on the road, and the Mariners are -135 betting favorites according to the online sportsbooks.

The Orioles have won 3 of the 4 head-to-head meetings against Seattle this season, and Baltimore is going with Jeremy Guthrie (2-6, 1.15 WHIP, 3.63 ERA) as their starting pitcher today.  Guthrie has had some bad luck this season, but has pitched some excellent games against the Mariners in past years.  Seattle is hitting just .228 on the season, but has swatted .256 over the course of their last 10 games.  The slight bump in batting average isn’t enough to convince me that this team has a legitimate offense, and I’m expecting Guthrie to have a very quality outing.

Seattle will counter with Erik Bedard (3-4, 1.26 WHIP, 3.48 ERA), and the oft-injured southpaw can be dominant at times.  Bedard has given up just 6 hits and 3 earned runs over his 2 career starts against Baltimore, and he’s thrown some terrific innings in recent starts.  The Orioles have hit just .246 on the season (.241 against left-handed pitchers), but their .261 average over their last 10 games indicates that they are starting to warm up.  The problem for Baltimore is that second baseman Brian Roberts, shortstop Cesar Izturis, and first baseman Derrek Lee are all on the disabled list, while center fielder Adam Jones has a dinged shoulder and might also miss this one.

Although I expect Guthrie to have an excellent start, the bet here has to be the Mariners and Bedard against this injury-depleted offense.  I think that Bedard will also have a dominant game, and Baltimore’s bullpen will be their downfall.  The Orioles come into this one with a 4.51 bullpen ERA, and Seattle’s relief pitchers (2.75 ERA) are a much stronger bet to have success if this clash is tied up in the late innings.
