Tuesday MLB Best Bet: Rangers vs. Tigers

Josh Hamilton

The Tuesday MLB best bet is ready in the game between the Rangers and the Tigers.

We have a nice MLB best bet ready for Tuesday and it will be in the 1:05 PM ET early game between the Detroit Tigers (3-7) and the red hot Texas Rangers (9-1).  The Rangers are in the midst of their best start in MLB history and that was enough to convince the Las Vegas sportsbooks to list Texas as a medium-sized favorite despite being the road team for their game against the Tigers.  We’ll take a look at both teams and let you know if Detroit can find a way to pull off the upset.

The Tigers will be putting their poor 1-3 record at home against the solid 3-1 road mark of the Rangers, but it is worth noting that Texas has won just 3 of their last 15 games in Detroit.  Texas is fairly injury free but the Tigers have right fielder Magglio Ordonez (.208, 0 HR, 1 run) listed as doubtful with an Achilles injury and second baseman Carlos Guillen on the 15-day disabled list with a knee injury.

Lefty C.J. Wilson (1-0, 1.26 WHIP, 2.84 ERA) will be the starting pitcher for the Texas Rangers today and he’s never faced off against Detroit.  Wilson is coming off strong starts against the Red Sox and Mariners but I’ve been calling for him to have a bit of a statistical regression after surprising many last season.  The Tigers are hitting just .217 on the year against left-handed pitching but I could see them scoring a few more runs than some are expecting Wilson to give up.

Detroit will counter with right-hander Brad Penny (0-1, 2.07 WHIP, 11.17 ERA) and it is tough to figure out how Penny might do against Texas.  The veteran had a nice spring but was then shelled against the Yankees before rebounding a bit in an average effort against the Orioles.  Penny has generally pitched better in home games throughout his career and the clash against Texas will mark his first home start of the year.  The most recent meetings for Penny against the Rangers occurred in 2009 when the hard-throwing righty lost both starts after giving up a combined 9 earned runs off 15 hits over 11.1 innings pitched.

Texas has always hit extremely well at home while struggling a bit on the road and that statistic is holding true this season with the Rangers batting just .233 when not at The Ballpark in Arlington.  Penny is a good enough pitcher to throw some solid innings today and I still think that Wilson is due a bad game because I feel he’s been pitching over his head.  With that in mind, I’m calling for the home underdog Tigers to pull the upset and get a much needed win after dropping 3 straight.
