Tuesday MLB Best Bet: Yankees vs. Red Sox
Written by Jake Thompson
Tuesday, 30 August 2011 16:18

The game between the Yankees and the Red Sox just has to be our Tuesday MLB best bet.
The Boston Red Sox (82-51) have opened up a 1.5-game lead over the New York Yankees (80-52) in the American League East standings, and their Tuesday clash at Fenway Park has been selected as our MLB best bet of the day. Online sportsbooks have the road-team Yankees as -147 betting favorites with the MLB odds showing a total of 9.5 runs. Close to 60% of tracked MLB bettors are taking the Red Sox here and we’ll let you know if the majority is on the right side of the action.
Boston has controlled this rivalry lately with wins in 12 of the last 14 meetings against New York, with the Yankees going down in 6 of their last 8 at Fenway Park. The good news for the Yankees is that staff ace C.C. Sabathia (17-7, 1.16 WHIP, 2.99 ERA) is on the mound. The big left hander has been a bit too hittable recently and has given up 19 earned runs over his last 3 starts against the Red Sox. Boston hits .274 against south paws, .309 against lefties at Fenway, and .298 overall during their past 10 games.
New York has some injuries to take care of when they face off against right-handed Boston starter John Lackey (12-9, 1.55 WHIP, 5.98 ERA). Third baseman Alex Rodriguez is listed as doubtful with a sore left thumb while Yankees captain Derek Jeter is probable with the shortstop nursing a bruised right knee. New York has hit .266 over their last 10 games but Lackey has been a poor starter for much of the season as he deals with some personal problems. Lackey has won his last 3 starts against the Yankees despite allowing 11 earned runs over those 18.2 innings.
With both bullpens amongst the best in Major League Baseball, this prediction comes down to how the starting pitchers match up against the opposing offenses. Although Lackey has been horrible for much of the season, he has a nice history against New York and the Yankees just haven’t been hitting consistently lately. Sabathia is a star pitcher but he’s been off for the last month and Boston has hit him very well this year. On top of that, Sabathia has struggled with the long ball at Fenway Park and I have to think the home underdogs with the best record in the American League are the play here.
