U.S. Open Tennis: Federer vs. Tsonga Preview

federer tsonga

We’ll preview Thursday’s U.S. Open tennis match between Roger Federer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga with odds and predictions.

This is one of the toughest U.S. Open matches to call on Thursday, and our preview will break down everything you need to know about the clash between France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Switzerland’s Roger Federer.  The U.S. Open tennis odds at 5Dimes Sportsbook (click on that link for a 50% cash bonus) currently have Federer as a -265 favorite and our predictions will let you know if he’ll be able to win some money for his backers.

Federer has won 4 of 7 career matches against Tsonga but has lost his last two.  The U.S. Open is played on a fast hard court and Federer has won 3 of 5 against Tsonga when those conditions were met.  Tsonga and Federer last met up at the ATP World Masters 1000 in Montreal, Canada earlier this year when the U.S. Open underdog took home a 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-1 victory.

Part of the reason why Federer is such a large favorite here has to do with his 5 career U.S. Open trophies (2004-2008), but it’s far from the only reason.  Federer had a relatively easy 6-1, 6-2, 6-0 victory over Juan Monaco in the last round of the U.S. Open, while Tsonga might be on tired legs here after winning a tough fought 6-4, 6-7, 3-7, 6-4, 6-2 match against Mardy Fish.  It’s a quality win over a guy in Fish who is playing tremendous tennis right now, but there are questions about how much Tsonga has left in the gas tank for Federer.

I believe the last loss for Federer against Tsonga can be excused since the guy lives for these big tournaments and wanted to save energy.  A win wasn’t the most important thing in the world to him at that time and he should be as fresh as possible when he takes to the court tomorrow morning.  Tsonga gets all over the court with ease and hits extremely hard, but Federer is a tactician without a weakness.  Look for the Swiss master to exploit Tsonga’s weaker backhand while winning in four sets.

Federer vs. Tsonga Score Predictions:

Federer 6-4, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2
